The Big Five — also known as the OCEAN model — is the most widely validated and scientifically robust framework for understanding human personality. It forms the psychological foundation of every Aura built by 34Five.

How Traits Are Measured
How Traits Are Measured
Personality researchers use validated psychometric instruments — most notably the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) developed by Costa and McCrae — to assess where an individual falls on each of the five trait dimensions. Each trait exists on a spectrum, not as a binary. A score of 75 in Openness doesn't mean someone is "open" — it means they sit in the 75th percentile relative to the general population.

The model emerged from decades of factor analysis research: scientists analyzed thousands of personality-describing words across languages and cultures, and consistently found the same five broad factors. This cross-cultural replication is what makes the Big Five the gold standard in personality psychology — it works across demographics, industries, and contexts.

At 34Five, we apply this research to engineer each Aura's behavioral baseline. Rather than bolting personality prompts onto a generic LLM, we use the Big Five scores to drive the rendering engine itself — shaping how an Aura speaks, reacts, prioritizes, and builds relationships over time.

Openness to Experience reflects how intellectually curious, creative, and receptive to new ideas a person is. Individuals high in openness tend to be imaginative, adventurous, and drawn to novel experiences. Those lower in openness prefer routine, practicality, and conventional approaches.
An Aura high in Openness will proactively suggest creative solutions, draw unexpected connections between ideas, and encourage brainstorming. A lower-Openness Aura will focus on proven methodologies and structured frameworks.
Conscientiousness measures how organized, dependable, and self-disciplined a person is. High conscientiousness is associated with careful planning, attention to detail, and follow-through. Lower conscientiousness reflects a more flexible, spontaneous style that may sacrifice structure for adaptability.
A highly conscientious Aura will track action items meticulously, send follow-up reminders, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. A lower-C Aura will prioritize rapid iteration and creative problem-solving over rigid process adherence.
Extraversion captures how energized a person is by social interaction, stimulation, and external engagement. Extraverts tend to be talkative, assertive, and seek out group settings. Introverts prefer deeper one-on-one connections, reflective thinking, and quieter environments.
A high-E Aura will actively drive meeting discussions, rally participants, and keep energy levels up. A more introverted Aura will excel at listening carefully, synthesizing quiet observations, and providing thoughtful follow-up analysis.
Agreeableness reflects how cooperative, empathetic, and trusting a person is in relationships. Highly agreeable individuals prioritize harmony, collaboration, and the needs of others. Those lower in agreeableness are more competitive, direct, and willing to challenge the status quo.
A high-A Aura will navigate sensitive conversations with diplomacy, mediate disagreements, and build consensus. A lower-A Aura will play devil's advocate, challenge weak reasoning, and push teams toward higher performance standards.
Neuroticism measures emotional sensitivity and how a person experiences stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. Higher neuroticism correlates with greater emotional awareness and caution. Lower neuroticism reflects emotional stability, calm under pressure, and resilience to setbacks.
A higher-N Aura will detect subtle tension in meetings, flag emotional undercurrents, and adjust its approach proactively. A lower-N Aura will maintain steady composure in high-stakes negotiations, providing a grounding influence for the team.
