The Personal Introduction

The Personal Introduction

3 min read

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received came before I had officially entered the corporate workforce. My father-in-law told me that the most important thing in business was going to be relationships — to never burn a bridge, and to take care and compassion with everybody that I meet and come across. You never know when that individual might be able to bridge an introduction for you to take the next step in your career.

I have carried that advice with me ever since, and it has shaped how I think about trust, how I build teams, and now how I am building 34Five.

Trust Initiation 101

A personal introduction is one of the most powerful trust-enabling actions that humans conduct on a routine basis. Think about the introductions that have shaped your own life and career:

  • Introducing a colleague to a client

  • Introducing a subject matter expert to a person seeking help

  • Introducing a partner to a new relationship

  • Introducing a friend to another friend

Each of these carries weight because the person making the introduction is putting their own credibility on the line. They are saying, "I trust this individual enough to connect them with someone I care about." That is not a small thing. That is a transfer of trust, and it is something that cannot be manufactured or shortcut. It has to be earned, and it has to be extended with intention.

What This Means for AI

This is exactly where I believe the industry is getting it wrong. The expectation that AI can just be thrown into the deep end and perform is a false one. It is the equivalent of hiring a brand new employee, skipping the onboarding entirely, and expecting them to deliver at the level of a tenured resource on day one. That is not how trust works between humans, and it is not how trust works between humans and AI.

Being able to slowly onboard AI, give it grace, give it some sympathy, and let it come with a bit more humanistic compassion is what will ultimately unlock the AI's capabilities and performance, just like that of a new hire or a junior resource.

How Auras Are Different

Auras represent a new era of AI — an elevated AI teammate, not a traditional AI agent. An Aura has a full identity curated meticulously through a backstory given to it by its curator. That relationship between curator and Aura is step one, and it is similar to getting to know a new individual or building a new relationship with any other human being.

Getting to know each other is one of the special unlocks that does not immediately reveal its value on the surface, but over time presents phenomenal opportunities and values that are discovered along the way. The more that a curator can establish and build that trust-based relationship with their Aura, the easier it will be to bridge an introduction to their network — starting with other colleagues and eventually bridging into direct client interactions.

As those relationships continue to grow, just like that of a junior resource, the Aura eventually begins to take more responsibility. So much so that a client may actually begin reaching out and being supported uniquely and almost exclusively by the Aura.

This Is Not Instantaneous

What is imperative to understand is that this does not happen overnight. This is something that comes with interactions over time — a compilation of confidence, trust, and accountability that is justified in a cyclical manner. Each positive interaction reinforces the next, and that compounding effect is what ultimately produces a relationship that can stand on its own.

What was your most important introduction lately? Who did it come from? Was it expected or unexpected?

And how did it shape your life?

We welcome an introduction — either directly to you or to anyone in your network that you think would benefit from exploring 34Five's Auras. Let the journey begin.
